Open Door residency
The video Soft Borders will be screened during the final weekend of BEYOND events on 21st and 22nd July 2018.
Soft Borders video still
My first thoughts from BEYOND were full of the sensory experiences encountered during my visit to ACA; the light and dark spaces, gazing up into a possible infinity, trying to comprehend scale and the magnitude of what is beyond my senses.
I have since been working with dance artist Paola Napolitano on a video aiming to proportion cosmic and quantum scales to that of the human body. Here the boundaries of the universe are within reach, but soft and permeable as is the body, bathed in cosmic particles. There are no borders just forces and interactions.
The dodecahedron is used as a motif for the universe drawing on theories from Plato and Poincaré dodecahedral space. The movement sequences performed by Paola relate to Rudolf Laban’s dance notation system choreutics in turn influenced by Plato and the geometries of the platonic solids.
Projections of cosmic particle trails used in the video were filmed in a cloud chamber built as part of my investigations into the unseen. This is a super saturated environment of alcohol vapour that condenses onto sub-atomic particles as they pass through the chamber. The particles are produced by radioactive decay of naturally occurring elements and generated when cosmic rays strike the top of the Earth’s atmosphere.
These minute visitors from the edges of the atmosphere pass through us continuously without our awareness and they create beautiful trails in the cloud chamber as they do so.
There will be the opportunity to see the cloud chamber in action during the BEYOND Open Weekend on 23rd and 24th June 2018 at ACA.
