Yes, it’s been around 25 years since I last made a drawing I went from obsessively drawing to zero, and never thought of making so much as a mark pulled by hand or physical movement until lock down. There will be a reason for stopping buried somewhere, but it wasn’t some deliberate act of denial or a statement. Might be interesting to try to unpick that some time. As for starting again, the desire had been quietly rumbling for some time.


First some history. As a youngster a rising obsession with drawing began with my mother and an open coal fire. I recall my mother sitting me in front of the red embers and asking me to describe my illusionary…

Alan, I understand that you hadn't done much drawing for many years, so I'm intrigued why it is one of the forms that you are taking to now during lockdown. That's not necessarily a question, more a remark. You may not know why yet and maybe you don't need to know why ever. I'm also interested in how fast or slow making these drawings is. They look like they take a long while of creating the composition and context and then layering up with an emergent image.
